We believe that by supporting the greater "you"—through both local and global community initiatives—we can better serve you.
Locally many of our employees contribute their time and talents to a wide range of community organizations through participation in the company's Volunteer Time Off program. Employees also make financial contributions to the United Way through our annual employee-led campaign and to non-profit organizations through the Matching Gift program. And through the Aviva Charitable Foundation grant program, contributions are made to support a variety of programs that help create strong communities. Additionally, this belief – in You – most recently yielded our global Street to School program, an initiative that helps children living on the street get back into school or training programs.
Street to School
Aviva has made a global commitment to help 500,000 children worldwide get off the street and into school or training in five years through a program called “Street to School.” In the U.S., we’ve joined forces with Covenant House nationally to help homeless children across the country get off the streets and reach their full potential. While many may view these children as invisible, we see people with potential who need hope and help.
This partnership funds education, job training, basic needs and the research that can break the chain of youth homelessness. This partnership is more than a donation, it is a true collaboration. Aviva works with Covenant House to raise awareness of this issue, advocate for homeless youth and involve its employees, agents and customers in the initiative.
In the communities where our employees live and work, we partner with United Way to help homeless and at-risk youth through dropout prevention programs, reading and literacy programs and basic needs such as food and shelter.
Through our Street to School program, a promise has been sent to kids everywhere that no matter how hard it is, someone cares and believes in them.
And we’ll do whatever is possible to never let the streets win.

Youmanity
In addition to supporting local and global community causes, we have an ongoing initiative that's about helping you make an impact. It's called Youmanity, and it's the belief that one person – you -- can use an act of kindness, big or small, to make a difference. Through a series of Youmanity programs, we're inspiring acts of good, and recognizing people who carry them out. It's just another way we put people before policies.
You + Humanity = Youmanity

Environmental Responsibility
Aviva USA's headquarters facility in Des Moines, Iowa is the largest LEED-gold certified building in the state and one of only five its size or larger in America to achieve that designation, according to the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
Aviva USA is part of Aviva plc – the world's sixth-largest insurance group and the first global insurance company to become carbon-neutral. LEED is a voluntary program that defines high-performance green buildings. Certification level is determined through the internationally recognized U.S. Green Building Council rating system, providing third-party verification that a building's design, construction, operations and maintenance are environmentally focused.
Among the many features that contributed to the building attaining a gold-level certification are:
• motion-sensor and auto-dimming lighting in offices and conference rooms;
• high-efficiency ventilation systems, with individual air flow controls for each employee;
• Iowa limestone and other materials quarried or purchased locally;
• a food waste grinding/composting system in the cafeteria;
• a solar-powered trash compactor;
• a pond system that collects and retains rainwater runoff, which is then used for irrigation,
limiting water usage;
• an established wetland habitat on the southwest corner of the campus;
• priority parking for low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles, as well as for those
employees who carpool;
• direct access to natural light for more than 95% of employees.
The Aviva Charitable Foundation
The Aviva Charitable Foundation, created in December 1994, is committed to supporting the communities where its employees live and work. Currently those locations are Des Moines, Iowa; Topeka, Kansas and Melville, New York. Through the Foundation's grant-making program, contributions are directed to organizations or programs that in general focus on our Street to School initiative, human services, the environment and community betterment.
The Foundation will review grant submissions twice during the 2011 calendar year. Grant applications should be submitted on or before May 1, 2012 or September 10, 2012. Please consider the following guidelines prior to submitting a grant application:
• Because Foundation funds are limited, we encourage only non-profit organizations who have received funding within the last two years to apply for grant awards in 2011.
• Grant requests are accepted only once per calendar year per organization.
• Grant requests that follow the criteria outlined in the application and are received by the deadline date, will be eligible for consideration.
The Foundation's Board of Directors reviews grant applications and typically sends letters of approval or declination within eight weeks of the grant deadline date. The Foundation is a tax-exempt organization as described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
In addition, the Foundation matches gifts made by employees to 501(c)(3) designated, non-profit organizations. Each year employees make financial commitments to organizations throughout the country that are building better communities. The Foundation matches these gifts on a quarterly basis.
